Segmentations are an essential piece to building a campaign. They define the targeted groups you wish to communicate with. Their goal is to segment a pool of constituents the way you want.
Prerequisite
In order to build a segmentation, you must first have a datasource connected. If you don’t have one, visit our Quick Setup Guide.
To begin building a segmentation, go to the Segmentations page, click Create New Strategy, and select Create Blank. Segmentations are divided into three parts: Name and Description, defining your Global group and creating segments.
Name and Description
Start by giving your segmentation a clear, meaningful name. This will help you recognize it later when you need to use it in a campaign. Adding a description isn’t required, but it’s a good way to give context to you and your team about what the segmentation is meant for.
Define a Global Group
The Global Group is your starting point. It represents a pool of constituents which you build by adding inclusions (to bring people in) and exclusions (to leave people out). If you’d like a refresher on how inclusions and exclusions work, check out the Segmentation > Inclusions and Exclusions section.
Info:
Because every organization is structured differently, the lists you choose will depend on your own setup.
As an example, you might start by including a list like constituents who donated in the last five years. If there are people in that list you don’t want to include, you can add one or more exclusions.
Keep in mind that communication channels are not part of this step. In AmpliPhi, channels are managed separately. For details on how they work, visit the Channels page.
Dividing Your Global Group Into Segments
Once your global group is ready, you can divide it into segments. Segments let you target different parts of the global pool more precisely.
For this guide, let’s create two segments. First, add a new segment, name it Lapsed 3 Years, and include a list of constituents who have lapsed for three years or more. Then, create another segment named Lapsed 2 Years and include donors who have lapsed for two years or more.
How Does It Work?
Segments follow a hierarchy. The first segment you create — in this case, Lapsed 3 Years — selects everyone in that category from the global group. Whatever remains then flows into the next segment. The second segment, Lapsed 2 Years, identifies donors lapsed for two years from the remaining pool. The same logic applies if you add more segments.
If you’d like a deeper explanation, visit the Segmentation > Segment Hierarchy section.
What Happens Next?
As you build your segmentation, AmpliPhi automatically runs calculations in the background to determine the size of each group. Depending on how many constituents you’re working with, this might take a moment, but you don’t need to wait — you can continue working elsewhere while the calculations finish.
Once everything is processed, your first segmentation will be ready, and you can move on to learning how to Build And Configure Your First Campaign.
